Department of Science and Technology Education.

The Department of Science and Technology Education was created from the Department of Education, Faculty of Education, in November, 2006 (2006/2007 Academic Session). Professor Muhammadu Abdullahi was appointed by the Vice-Chancellor as the first Acting Head of the Department.

All the B.Sc. (Ed) students from level 100 to level 400 including the Spill over students were transferred from the Department of Education to the new Department. The Department admitted its first set of level 1 and level 2 students during the 2007/08 session. As at now the Department offers three programmes in B.Sc. (Ed) Science Education, B.Sc. (Ed) Agriculture and B.Ed (Tech). The B.Sc. (Ed) Science Education and B.Sc. (Ed) Agriculture pprogrammes are run in conjunction with Faculty of Science and Faculty of Agriculture respectively, where as B.Ed (Tech) programme is run in the Department only. In other words, the B.Sc. (Ed) Science Education and B.Sc. (Ed) Agriculture students offer educational foundation courses in the Department, and then go to the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Agriculture to specialize in their teaching subjects. Technology students, however, are wholly taught in the Department.

In the summer of 2007 the Department moved to atemporary building near the Department of Special Education. The building was rehabilitated to include fully equipped offices of the Head of Department, six office accommodations for the academic staff members, two toilets one for males and the other for females. Two large rooms served as multipurpose laboratories each with its preparatory/laboratory attendant room, a Conference/meeting room, a small room intended to serve as e-Library and an Examination room.
While the emphasis of the Department had so far been on Science Education, the new Department was created with dual purpose of catering equally for students who wish to study B.Ed Technology Education. Thus in the 2008/2009 academic session, the Department offered B.Ed (Technology Education) withto the first set of two students who applied for the course. The following year more students applied for the B.Sc. (Ed) Technology Education. All B.Sc. (Ed) Technology education students, who follow the minimum academic standards for the programme set out by National Universities Commission (NUC) are taught in the Department.

PHYSICAL FACILITIES

  1. Laboratory Space

    2. The Departmental Laboratories are currently been shared with the Faculty of Science Laboratories as the students are undergoing their Science lectures and practical’s there. Each unit of the laboratory is manned by efficient and well trained personnel But with this new building the department has three laboratories i.e. biology, chemistry and physics, which are in the process of been equipped.

  2. Classrooms

    3. There are classrooms, large halls and lecture theaters shared among the programmes run by the department, these include: Alhamsat, Yobe theater A&B, A03, A02, B03 and New Hall.

  3. Library

    4. The Department has access to four (4) libraries, the Departmental e-Library equipped with computers and internet facilities. The e-Library keep e-Journals, which are sourced from JSTOR through the University Library subscription, for easy reference by students. The University Library is stocked with current books, journals, periodicals, and internet facilities for all students in the university while at the departmental level copies of final year projects of undergraduate theses are kept for students references. Faculty of Education Library and also Faculty of Science library.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMMES

To provide candidates especially N. C. E (Tech) and those who finished Senior Secondary schools the opportunity of furthering their education to higher qualifications in Technology Education. This will help in alleviating the problem of lack of professional Technology Education teachers in our educational institutions particularly post primary schools. This is also in line with the Federal Government’s objective of emphasizing Science and Technology in our institutions of higher learning.

OBJECTIVES OF B.TECH. (ED) PROGRAMME
The objectives of the programme are to;

  1. Produce teachers with sufficient depth and breadth in at least two (2) academic subjects (2) in technology to be able to teach both subjects at the senior secondary school and post secondary institutions.
  2. Train students who will possess sufficient level of competency in the theory and practice of education, including teaching practice, to be able to teach education teacher training colleges.
  3. Train students who will help in training skilled and semi-skilled crafts men and technicians so as to meet the manpower need of the country.
  4. Train people who will be positively oriented towards the teaching profession.
  5. Possess a firm foundation for further academic and professional advancement.

In 2010/2011 another programme, B.Sc. (Ed) Agriculture was also introduced with the full co-operation of the Faculty of Agriculture. The programme started with six students.

General Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission in to level 100 B. Tech (Ed) programmes, a candidate in addition to satisfying all the requirements in UTME must have one of the following sets of qualifications.

  1. Five (5) GCE 'O' level credits
  2. Five (5) credits in WASC/SSCE
  3. Five (5) credits in WASC (Technical Certificate/City and Guild certificate)
  4. Five (5) credits in Grade II Teachers' Certificate or merit and three must be in sciences.
  5. Any other qualification deemed equivalent by the University

To be eligible for admission to level 200 of these programmes, a candidate must have one of the following set of qualifications.

  1. Candidate with NCE (Technical) who have obtained not lesson three (3) 'C' grades and have had atleast two (2) years teaching experience after obtaining their NCE.
  2. Candidate with HSC/GCE 'A'/IJAM who have obtained not less than three (3) 'C' grades relevant to the programmes.

In addition, all candidates must satisfy the University general requirement in English.
